The Mistakes That Ruin Pinterest Strategy

• There is no board strategy. All good Pinterest strategies begin with category boards. Interesting boards get attention, boring boards get ignored. If you want your boards to be ‘above average’ think of creative ways to curate content that people will love, and give your board an interesting name.

• There is no attention to image style. Pinterest is an image site, with many different kinds of styles on display – vintage, goth, clean, alternative, literary – the works. When you post images they need to fall into a specific image ‘style’ to be shared. Plain, stock images are not what Pinterest is about. Go the extra mile!

• There is zero attention to SEO strategy. Curating and posting 10,000 images is fun, but if no-one can find them, it’s a giant waste of time. Like any social platform, you need an SEO strategy that will get your images seen. Do keyword research for each board, each image and optimize your links and descriptions.

• Being a comment prude. Newsflash! Comment areas are for comments AND discussions, but you have to turn your fan comments into ongoing chats. That means you need to be there, leading the conversation.

• Not being creative with themed images. There is more to an image than you think – what about infographics, tutorials, how-to images, showcases, fails, social proof and dozens of other ways you can engage and teach your image audience? Find out how you can best sell your product or service using images!

pinterest marketing youre doing it wrong 2 7 Tragic Mistakes That First Time Pinterest Marketers Make

• Not having a Pinterest landing page. Where does all that traffic go, when they click on the links beneath your images? Hopefully, it goes to a landing page that welcomes your Pinterest fans to your website, and invites them to subscribe to your email list. Why sell them one product when you can sell them hundreds over time?

• No exclusivity on Pinterest. What makes your Pinterest page special? Do you give away great stuff to your community? Why not create a 10 page ebook and then tell your Pinterest fans that they are the only ones with access! All they have to do is share your Pinterest image on Facebook.

If you’re about to embark on your first Pinterest strategy – remember this: your returns will only be as good as your end goals. Get a feel for how things work on the platform before investing in image creation. You can use the same images on Flickr, Facebook, Twitter and across your other social sites for extra value.

Avoid these tragic Pinterest marketing mistakes and you’ll be well on your way to creating a page that thousands of pinners love.

Tip #1: A Thoughtful Pinterest Promotion

The people on Pinterest love sentiment, which means Mother’s day will be a big hit. Pick a product of yours and have a tutorial image made. To spice it up, have your mom be the presenter in the image!

Tip #2: The Mother’s Day Hashtag

Everyone is going to be using Mother’s day hashtags this weekend, so be sure to create yours and get the word out. Get your mom to hold a sign with your hashtag on it, and promote it across your social pages.

Tip #3: The Viral YouTube Video

Mother’s day is a great reason to be non-traditional – so do something different with your promotions to get the ‘alternative’ crowd buying from you this week. Or try looking for alternative markets. Single dads are moms too!

Tip #4: The Facebook Share

People all over the world will be looking for a beautiful image and words to send their mom on Facebook. Create something incredible and then brand it by subtly putting in a link to your sales page URL. Lots of people will share it.

Tip #5: Facebook Cover Opportunity

If you haven’t yet used your Facebook cover for a discount, Mother’s day is a great time to test it out. Create a fun, heartwarming cover that promotes your goods and services, with a special discount for moms only.

Tip #6: Create Blog Posts For Your Email List

Create a series of 3-5 blog posts centered around Mother’s day, and attract traffic to your newsletter sign up page. You could even advertise that all moms who sign up get a free mystery gift! Make it worthwhile.

Tip #7: Run a Mother’s Day Competition

Use Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest to run a successful Mother’s day competition, where a special mom can win something amazing. Clearly state that each entry is only valid if they sign up to your list, like your Facebook page or share a specific post.

Tip #8: Start a Mother’s Day Board

Holidays are great because they drive tons of sales. That means if you invest time and effort into curating great images for your Mother’s day board, it will convert over time. Plus, you’ll end up growing your community and making more sales.

Tip #9: Give Something Back

Remember in the old days when you used to get a 13th donut for buying a dozen? Old fashion loyalty tactics like this are back in. Send everyone on your email list something special, like a coupon or a free ebook. Mother’s day is about appreciation!

Tip #10: Social Proof For Exposure

Mother’s day is photo day, which means that you have a unique opportunity to get shots of your mom and your brand together. Do something special for your own mom, and use the photos to send a message to your fans. They will love the intimacy and your community will grow.

What are you doing for your mom this Mother’s day? Anything special?

In a matter of days you can collect thousands of fans, and be selling your products or services directly from your page. Plus, it’s an incredible way to drive more traffic to your online business. Today I’m examining which top 20, most hideously embarrassing mistakes small business owners make on the platform.

pinterest marketing 300x215 20 Embarrassing Pinterest Marketing FAILS You’re Making!

Courtesy of buytwitterfollowers101.wordpress.com

#1: Bad Photography Fail: For some unknown reason, a few small business owners (more than a few) think that they can put shoddy, B grade product photos on Pinterest. Marketing on this platform is all about beauty, elegance and sophistication – not fuzzy, dark images.

#2: Your Images are 1 Dimensional: If your Pinterest marketing photos have no purpose, organization or strategy – and they are all standard product pics – don’t expect a ton of fans.

#3: Poor Linking Practices: Curalate discovered that 48% of popular pins on Pinterest link to non-existent pages. That’s a lot of traffic and sales. Track your links using Bit.ly!

#4: Out of Stock Fail: If your amazing Pinterest images link to product pages, and there is no stock available – what’s the point? Sort out your inventory and stock processes.

pinterest marketing 300x114 20 Embarrassing Pinterest Marketing FAILS You’re Making!

Courtesy of kglobal.com

#5: No Suggested Products: All URL’s that you use for Pinterest marketing need to suggest other products on your business website – how else are you going to upsell?

#6: The Reason To Click To Your Page: It’s nice that you have 30 images of a candle. But putting them ALL on Pinterest isn’t wise. People need a reason to click to your business page. Place 3-5 images on Pinterest, and host the rest on your sales pages.

#7: Lack of Product Review Strategy: As a small business owner, you’ll need to check that all of your Pinterest marketing images are functional and working every 3 months, or you’ll lose money. Broken links, products that aren’t available and wrong product listing will harm your sales potential.

#8: The Missing Promo Board: Having lots of discounts and promos is great – but not if they’re spread over 15 boards. Host all of your Pinterest marketing promotions on 1 board.

#9: No Action Shots: Prove that your products work by going the extra mile and demonstrating them – either in video or an image tutorial. They sell products!

#10: Your Brand has No Personality: Having a personality means running some boards that are curated from other people’s products and images. Develop your brand with Pinterest marketing by associating yourself with other great brands.

#11: Rubbish or No Infographics: Yes, infographics are tricky to make and they can be expensive to commission. But they get lots of views, likes and interactions. Sometimes in Pinterest marketing you have to spend a little to make a lot. Don’t be cheap!

#12: No Stats, Data, Inside Scoops: People love to know the inside scoop about your brand. Give it to them! Share image stats, charts, graphs and progress on Pinterest.

#13: Ignoring Your Customer Base: Every sale should attempt to collect a testimonial. In Pinterest marketing, you’ll want to have a board for testimonials and endorsements.

#14: Not Being a Credible Seller: To be credible you need authority. To get authority, you have to have a great opinion on expert topics in your niche. How are you proving this?

Marketing For Pinterest 300x189 20 Embarrassing Pinterest Marketing FAILS You’re Making!

Courtesy of smallbusinessesdoitbetter.com

#15: Expose or Bust: Not allowing your customers to see your operation is not good for business. Pinterest marketing demands that you include behind the scenes shots.

#16: Pinning Like a Crazy Person: There is such a thing as pinning too much, too often. Every pin needs a solid sales reason to exist. If you don’t have one, don’t pin it.

#17: Ignoring the Sunday Pin: Evidence suggests that pinning on Sunday mornings can result in more sales than any other time of day. Pinterest marketing is about leveraging the best opportunities, so pin on a Sunday!

#18: Being Too Shy To Boast About Your Brand: If you’re going to be at an event, show, workshop or conference, post some pins about it. Flyers that are simplified to work on Pinterest are way more effective than you think. Don’t be shy, be sly!

#19: Marketing Like an Amateur: There is nothing worse than stumbling on a Pinterest page that employs old-school marketing tactics. Bad graphics, bad images, horrible sales pitches and that’s it. There is nothing but tacky, cheap selling. Pinterest marketing isn’t about direct sales and hardcore pitches. It’s about community, repeat sales and entertainment.

#20: Not Using The Gifts Section: The gifts section on Pinterest will list your product price along with the image. It’s a secondary sales tool that many people simply don’t use. But it’s a great place to go to find interesting gifts for people – so use it!

enhanced buzz 836 1353342169 22 184x300 20 Embarrassing Pinterest Marketing FAILS You’re Making!

BONUS: There are many embarrassing Pinterest marketing tactics that float around the network. That’s why an entire FAIL culture has sprung up. These images show the ‘ideal’ photo and then a Pinterest user attempting to copy it, with no success. They are very funny, and very popular. You can use this final technique to get more shares and sales.

Pinterest has come a long way in a very short space of time. The best advice I can give you is to sit down with a piece of paper, and describe the different kinds of image posts you see on the various category areas. Try to create a 3 dimensional, complex and intriguing Pinterest marketing strategy that will grab potential customer’s attention.

Have you spotted any of these mistakes in your own Pinterest marketing strategy? Tell me which ones, and I’ll help!

Why then, can someone like Jane Wang transform her page into a 7 million person strong army of Pinterest followers? Today I take a closer look at what Wang does on her Pinterest page, and how you can use it to your advantage.

Capture1 1024x585 Marketing on Pinterest Like Power Pinner Jane Wang (7,500,000 Followers!)

Marketing On Pinterest Like Jane Wang

At first Jane’s profile seems like everyone else’s, except she has a penguin as her profile picture. She only follows 205 people on Pinterest and yet has over 7,549,836 followers of her pins. Marketing on Pinterest pages like this would help businesses earn on Pinterest – from the traffic referrals and product endorsements.

Here are some things we noticed that sets Jane’s page apart:

  • She uses Pinmarklet, a plugin that connects other image sites to Pinterest, ie Flickr, Realsimple.com and others. This means she finds interesting pictures on the net and shares them with her Pinterest marketing community via her boards.
  • She has 98 boards, which is a fair amount. Marketing on pinterest would be easier with more boards, as people are drawn to specific topics, like ‘red’ and ‘toys.’
  • Jane Wang’s top pinboard is called ‘delicious’ where she posts great pics about food for her audience. Six million of her followers follow this board. For marketing on Pinterest, relating your products or brand with food could be the difference between no followers, and thousands of them. They clearly love food!
  • pinterest marketing pinning with a purpose1 Marketing on Pinterest Like Power Pinner Jane Wang (7,500,000 Followers!)

    Courtesy of entrepreneur.com

  • She uses Pinterest hashtags to help people find her pins. It works the same way as Twitter, so it’s important to include these hashtags in every single one of your posts.
  • Jane is the queen of posting practical inspiring stuff. Even if her image choice is bland, the way the photo has been taken isn’t. Everything is always so beautiful which proves that for marketing on Pinterest, effects make the difference.
  • Jane always references where the image came from, which gets her followed. People love to see their pins in boards that have 7 million followers.
  • She always puts URL’s in the post, or properly cites it. This means no-one gets angry at her when she repins their stuff, and it prevents copyright battles.
  • The most interesting thing about Jane’s profile is there are no sales pitches, just personal endorsements for each product. It’s a great way for business owners to disarm their audience, and make them love their Pinterest marketing products.
  • Everything is super personal, things that she herself enjoys. Marketing on Pinterest should be undertaken by a business personality. People seem to respond better to people on Pinterest than businesses.
  • Antarctica is a cold State, so she works at her Pinterest account (22,000+ pins) all the time. The rule here is to plan your boards, and work on them every day. But only pin the best images, or you won’t be a very good curator for your brand.
marketing with pinterest Marketing on Pinterest Like Power Pinner Jane Wang (7,500,000 Followers!)

Courtesy of hifisocialwebmarketing.com

Another thing I noticed on Jane Wang’s profile is that she invites comments from people, by not making the posts about her responses. This allows fans to chat among themselves, or address her directly, if they want to.

From what we can see here, Jane is very strict about using Pinterest as a personal place to say something to the world about who she is as a person. This is what your brand should be doing when marketing on Pinterest!

Have you tried to market any products on Pinterest yet? How did it go?

Why Do I Need To SEO Pinterest?

Pinterest is the world’s fourth largest referrer of website traffic, leaving other sites like Youtube and Yahoo in the dust. The potential is there for Pinterest to be a referral traffic powerhouse, so why wouldn’t you use it for Pinterest marketing?

The A-Z of Pinterest Marketing SEO

The aim of marketing on Pinterest is to get lots of followers, repinners and people that will click through to your website or share your content.

1. Become a Viral Master

• Make sure that your images are highly sharable by creating ‘instructographics,’ ‘infographics,’ inspirational images and by sharing meaningful quotes on the site.

• Post your viral Pinterest marketing images at the right time of day – namely at six in the morning, and at six at night. You can also work out the time zone differences for the UK, Europe and Australia, to post at these times.

• You have to share to be shared. Build up lots of great boards that show fans that you share other people’s images. They will share yours if you shared theirs. Empty boards don’t get noticed, so fill them up to improve your SEO potential.

2. The Intricacies of Pinterest Marketing SEO

• Earn on Pinterest by getting more traffic – how? By using keywords in your comments, titles, descriptions and for your board names. Don’t forget to put your pins in the right categories so people can find them.

• Pinterest link building is very popular. Everytime you post an image you can include a URL, which creates a backlink to your sites and improves SEO.

• Link your Pinterest marketing account with your Facebook account. It improves your viral potential as people love to share their pins on Facebook too.

• Add ‘pin it’ widgets to all of your websites, blogs or product pages so that people can choose to pin your images.

• Make friends with 10 people and form a pin network. Share each other’s pins, to reach a greater number of people on Pinterest. This Pinterest marketing tactic exposes your pins to more people, so you get more comments and shares.

All of these great techniques have been 100% proven, by expert marketers and by myself. Pinterest marketing is more about offering value in the form of an image than anything else. Don’t forget to strip your images with a URL in case they do go viral.

These Pinterest strategies will help rapidly improve the traffic that you get to your sites, both directly and indirectly. Imagine one image of yours reaching millions of people, and then even 2% of these people visiting your sites. That’s the Pinterest marketing potential!

Don’t forget to diversify your keywords and don’t be too repetitive with your content or you might be seen as a spammer.

SMS Marketing Recap: What Is It Again?

SMS marketing is a lot of things, but it’s evolved with social communication and strategy. In fact, that one-on-one messaging system was the first form of mobile social media, and it deserves some props for that.

  • SMS marketing can help you create small communities around your brand or business. For example, a gym can collect gym subscribers and let them know when times for classes change.
  • SMS marketing can keep people informed like a mini private news service for your brand. A quick message burst and everyone knows that your club is having a booming party on Friday night. These can go viral you know.
  • SMS marketing is one those ‘leave on auto pilot’ solutions. We love those! Just add in what’s going on, and grow your subscriber list.

TIP! Some 90% of all people READ their SMS’s!

Dave from MindMe Mobile says, “Your SMS text message marketing campaign will be highly lucrative if you monitor it, and learn from the feedback and reactions that you receive during your strategy. Tweaking strategies as you go along will result in a steady flow of income, from your effort!”

He’s not wrong. Like any great ‘social’ media campaign, monitoring your SMS campaign on Pinterest will get you the best returns. Here’s how to do it!

How To Attract Millions With a Great SMS-Pinterest Strategy

So, how do you use Pinterest, the massive image and video sharing site to get people to sign up to your SMS lists? Simple. You pander, and then you evoke emotion. Here are some tips to get you there.

1. Make an image really worth looking at. It should be about your business (gym, bakery, club, retail store) and be inspirational. Include an INCREDIBLE special in the image and in small, at the bottom, an SMS marketing prompt to inspire new sign ups. Get more freebies when you join our list!

2. Be local – all the time. Retail stores are local stores and you’ll want to attract your local audience. Find out what’s happening in your town or city, support it, create awesome sharable images about it – then include you SMS sign up at the bottom.

3. Take full advantage of QR codes. They’re fun to use on Pinterest and work like magic with SMS marketing. They are also less threatening. So when someone likes your image, have the QR code take them to an SMS sign up page – offer an incentive!

4. Don’t only promote your SMS marketing number and word. But if you’re going to – choose a word that you can define in an inspiring and meaningful way. Choose an image that really compliments it for your pin.

There are a thousand variations of doing this to make SMS marketing work for your business on Pinterest or sites like Instagram. QR codes are fantastic, or you can keep your SMS words and numbers small and unobtrusive – remember the more people share the better your business is promoted.

Pinterest Marketing Disclaimer

Heads up: Pinterest is not your own personal advertising pin-board. Before you do anything on the platform you have to focus it at your fans or pinners. If they aren’t instantly taken with your image – they’re not going to repin it.

Pinterest marketing is about creating brand images that people will want to add to their personal pin-collections. That means there are rules that you need to follow if you want your images to go viral on Pinterest.

Step 1: Make Your Images Beautiful

Pinterest marketing is technically about getting your product or service images out there for people to like and share, but that
doesn’t mean they have to be ‘stock-standard’ and boring.

The Instagram effect on images is a big hit, or you can use an online photo editing program like befunky.com, or just zap a trendy effect on your photo in Photoshop. You’ll be amazed at how much better an image can look when it’s been put through a filter.

Action plan: For optimum Pinterest marketing, make your images gorgeous and artistic.

Step 2: Try Some Mainstream Pandering

Pinterest marketing is about identifying the current trends, and modeling your pinboard images or general strategy on these pins. Just take a look at the top 6 pins that have been so widely shared on Pinterst.

1. A recipe for hasselback garlic cheesy bread
2. Rainbow fruit kebabs
3. Lovely framing compositions
4. A recipe for Disney’s loaded baked potato soup
5. Frozen strawberry mojito recipe
6. Frozen yogurt drops recipe

These were the most shared images of 2012. As a Pinterest marketing person, this should tell you a few things. Namely that people love to learn, they love food, and they get excited about step-by-step images.

Action plan: For a great pinterest marketing strategy, create instructional, recipe-like images.

Step 3: Be Inspirational and Positive

There’s nothing quite like an inspirational quote to put you in a good mood. Pinterest is brimming with inspiring quotes! People love, love, love to share meaningful words. For Pinterest marketing, this means a clever way to get your product photos shared.

Action plan: For pinterest marketing inspiration, create or use powerful quotes in your product images that resonate with the product.

Step 4: Be a Description Pro

You can leave a description with your image that goes below it once published. These are amazingly important in Pinterest marketing, and are barely used properly. Your description should tell the viewer what your image is all about, or add something extra to the conversation. And ALWAYS ask people to repin your image, it works!

Action plan: Pinterest marketing means fun, creative or interesting descriptions so that people can get a better idea about what your image is trying to say or do.

Step 5: Pinterest Marketing Secrets

Make friends with 10 top Pinterest influencers and share their content all the time. When you post content of your own – these influencers will return the favor – instantly sharing your image with thousands of potential repinners.

Action plan: Be an active repinner, but focus your efforts on Pinterest influencers.

If you want your small retail business to thrive, then think about implementing a high traffic Pinterest campaign.

Here’s how to get more online traffic, and more foot traffic, with the third most popular social media network in the US.

For the sake of this mini campaign, let’s assume you own a small bookshop. Your sales rely on the people that come in to buy your books each day. How can Pinterest help?

Step 1: Photos Sessions For Pinterest Marketing

Become one with your camera. If you’re going to have a successful Pinterest campaign, then you need to learn to become a photo-strategist. That means planning out your boards and figuring out how you can get your community more involved in your account.
For example, plan out three Pinterest marketing boards called ‘customer reviews,’ ‘weekly top 20,’ and ‘reader of the week.’

  • Customer review board: Snap photos of customers with books they’ve read. Ask them for a one line review on the book – record it. Publish the photo on your board with your customer’s one line review. Use this to start a conversation.
  • Weekly top 20 board: Compile a weekly list of the 20 ‘best-selling’ books in your store. Create Pinterest marketing images that compare your community sales with nation-wide sales. Publish the images and results and invite reactions from your community for a traffic boost.
  • Reader of the week board: Take a photo of your ‘reader of the week’ customer and make them feel appreciated by publishing their photo on Pinterest, along with a discount coupon. Giving back pays off when Pinterest marketing.

Step 2: Use Pinterest as a Coupon Alternative

One of the Pinterest marketing tricks I’ve picked up along the way, is to use the image power on the platform to generate more foot traffic. One of the best ways to do this is to have coupons designed, then publish and share them on Pinterest.

It will increase your fan base, and allow real people to come into your bookshop to get discounts off your books.

Step 3: Use Pinterest Marketing To Fuel Your Blog

Take in-store photos of new book arrivals, and based on your customer’s feedback – compile fun, readable blog posts on the books. You can even create another Pinterest Marketing board called ‘bookshop blogs’ to generate interaction on Pinterest as well. User-generated reviews based on Pinterest feedback will only become more popular.

Step 4: Take Advantage of Customization

Pinterest is essentially about curating content that makes people understand more about who you are and what you like. For your Pinterest marketing strategy, take advantage of this by creating unique photos (with different effects) of the books in your store.

Your fans will take the ones they like and add them to their own boards, thereby expanding your reach.

Step 5: Pinterest Marketing Videos

At the end of every month, create a video that details which books were most popular in your bookshop and why – using your community, and Pinterest generated reviews. It doesn’t take much, but some image ordering and a bit of a voice over. You’ll get loads more traffic, and best of all – your community will love how you value their opinion.

Use these 5 steps to come up with your own amazing Pinterest marketing strategy. For foot traffic right now, there’s no better site to use!

But this doesn’t undervalue the fact that Pinterest – while hyped – is an incredible business tool for social sales. That’s why today, I’m going to give you 5 insider tips on how to use Pinterest to sell more products and services!

#1: Enhance Your WordPress Blog

Your blog is the main stage for your entire sales funnel, so it makes sense to source a decent Pinterest plugin to stream real-time comments from your pinboard – to your blog. If you’ve been investing a lot of time in Pinterest, then getting yourself a plugin like Pinwidget will make all the difference to your cross sales and overall bottom line.

#2: Drive Additional Traffic With a Guest Pinboard

If your own board is a little too one sided, create a guest pinboard and invite friends, fans and interested pinners to add to the collection. To sweeten the deal, use this arena to run competitions – the best pin wins ‘A’ or ‘B.’ Do this right, and you’ll be able to expand your pinboard considerably, not to mention increase interaction and direct traffic to your website.

#3: Diversify Your Youtube Feed With Pinterest

Whether you’ve just started with Youtube or you’ve been posting videos for years, Pinterest is a new place for you to get more comments, shares, likes and pins thanks to a new generation of image community commenters. Post old and current videos on Pinterest, find the right boards to post these on, and wait for the flood of sales, traffic and fame.

#4: Use Pinterest as an Ebook Sales Tool

If you’ve written some ebooks to promote your business, or to sell directly for cash – Pinterest is a great way to do that. Upload your front cover, blurb and back cover – and single ‘feature’ pages to add value for your followers. If you like, you can even include a link to a free chapter below the pin. This technique is selling ebooks faster than some Clickbank pages, so don’t sneer at it before you try it!

#5: Use Pinterest as a Forum Question Board

Upload a photo of yourself, or one of your team members – and offer to help your fans do something simple, yet specific. Offer advice, insight and a fresh perspective. Small businesses are using the ‘forum question board’ tactic to land new long term clients, or to sell products by the dozen.

When you add a face to the offer, it humanizes the process. Then when requests start pouring in, you can record ‘talking head’ videos in response to fan queries. This is one way to make a name for yourself and your business online. It works like a charm!

Use these 5 scorching hot Pinterest tactics to shape your marketing campaign into a powerful daily earner for your business. Focus on value, quality and consistency here – not the financial reward, and you’ll go far!
