So in the year ahead, it’s essential for your business to optimize its social media marketing strategy. Here are five steps to get you started:

Resolution #1: Picture it on Pinterest

Why not start with 2012’s lead social media story? Many have been slow to take advantage of the sudden surge of popularity of the latest online sensation–but the research numbers are too dramatic to ignore.

In the past 12 months, Pinterest usage has grown by over 1000%, with the nearest competitor being Google Plus, at 80%. Make no mistake–Facebook is still the social media champ by a huge margin, but Pinterest’s marketing firepower is nothing to sneeze at. According to a recent study, fifty brands who did a Pinterest promotion found that it caused a 150% jump in followers.

Resolution #2: Don’t minimize mobile

According to NBC News, the number of Facebook users who began accessing the site through tablets and smartphones jumped 24% from June to September of 2012–and is now well over 30 million. The company also put out a statement pointing to their increasingly mobile future: “…we anticipate that the rate of growth in mobile usage will exceed the growth in usage through personal computers for the foreseeable future and that the usage through personal computers may be flat or continue to decline in certain markets.”

Mobile social media marketing requires a different approach that respects consumers that are on the go and, at the same time, creates a positive engagement with them–so make sure you make that shift with your strategy.

Resolution #3: Transform customers into your sales force

It was once again recently confirmed that, when it comes to recommendations for products and services, people trust other people similar to them far more than any sophisticated marketing campaigns. For example, 92% of consumers listen to people they personally know, while 70% of them also trust online consumer reviews. After that, the numbers fall off sharply.

The moral of this story? The more “fans” you create, the more “likes” you motivate and the more “shares” you inspire, the more success you’ll continue to experience–as others in your customers’ circles observe what their friends and relatives buy and follow suit.

Resolution #4: Take it inside, not just outside

Many companies are creating their own internal social media networks to boost morale, share news, gain feedback and solicit ideas for improvement. For instance, Unisys CEO Ed Coleman created his own Facebook-style system for employees and management to increase efficiency and keep everyone up to speed.

The next generation of workers welcomes this kind of approach; they’re used to communicating online and want their workplace to encourage the practice.

Resolution #5: Don’t disregard any demographic

Many still make the mistake of considering social media usage strictly an under-30 activity. Yes, 92% of that age group is on Facebook, Twitter, and the like, but 57% of those 50 to 64 years of age and even 38% of those over 65 are also engaged on at least one social network. Should any marketer seriously consider ignoring that portion of a demographic?

To quote Mike Bal of the Chicago-based agency, Baseline21, “The biggest change we will see in the next year is that we are over the main hump on the adoption curve. At this point it’s not a specific demographic, it’s all of them from grandmas to elementary-aged children.”

Social media marketing continues to be a fascinating field to watch, as it expands and evolves at a rapid pace and in unexpected ways. Its fast-moving force provides plenty of potential payoffs.

How do you harness this extreme force and become a master Jedi social manager? Today, I’m going to lead you through this post and teach you to be a powerful person in the world of social media, like Darth Vader in Star Wars.

What is The Social Media Management Force?

The ability to manage multiple social media accounts at the same time, with the goal of gaining more exposure, traffic and income from your efforts. This sounds simple, but to a young Padawan social manager it can be nearly impossible.

Darth Vader says: “To master social diversity and multiplicity is simple. Don’t expect to do it on your own, and without the right tools.”

Building Your Social Media Light Saber

No-one can be expected to become a social media management expert without the right tools. For a Jedi, the light saber is the most important tool. Your light saber will be your social media marketing platform or dashboard that you use to manage your accounts.

Choose from our top 5 pick of social media management tools:

1. Hootsuite
2. Vertical Response
3. Argyle Social
4. Sendible
5. Sprout Social

Once you have your social media sites loaded onto your dashboard, managing them will be less time consuming, and in this game, time is everything.

Darth Vader says: “Find a social dashboard you are comfortable with using. Don’t just choose the first one you find. Test different options to find the best weapon.”

Social Media Management Like a Jedi

A Jedi is a master of several things, namely: time, patience, defense, attack and mind control. If you can perfect these, you can become a powerful social media manager.

1. Time: Learn to divide your time among your social media sites according to their hierarchy of importance. They must align with your overall goals.

2. Patience: Social media management is about patience, and repetition. Keep working and engaging daily, and eventually you WILL be successful and fully trained.

3. Defense: Make sure that you know what the internet is saying about you, using your social media management tools. Then you can defend against online attacks.

4. Attack: Sometimes you need to launch a product or service into the market. This is when you’ll use your social media marketing tools to launch an attack on your niche. Hopefully, if your infrastructure is strong, you’ll win the battle.

5. Mind control: Not real mind control! I’m talking about getting folks to like you, whether they want to or not, using content. Social media management is about using content to bridge the gap between business and consumer.

Darth Vader says: “Learn these traits of a successful social media manager and practice them often. Soon you will become the person you are trying to be.”

The Consistency of Social Media Management

To be a Jedi you have to pay your dues. That means training for years, and then training for even longer in the field. It’s the same with becoming a powerful social media manager. You can only learn so much through theory, inevitably you will have to test things for yourself.

Keep working and trying new things. Come up with new strategies and test them using your light saber! Social media management doesn’t have to be an uphill battle if you are consistent with your methods and tests.

Work on your social media daily for best results and become a master social media management Jedi!

Social Websites That Help To Boost Your SEO

• Social media sites that are content heavy are great for SEO
• Social sites that are image heavy and highly viral are great for inspiring traffic
• Social media marketing platforms with fast interaction are great for SEO

Let’s take a look at these 5 hidden social media sites that will help you drive enormous traffic numbers to your websites.

#1: The Power of Pinterest

Pinterest, the break-out social media success of 2012 is THE social marketing platform for creating and driving traffic now. Pinterest beats Twitter, StumbleUpon, Google, Bing and Yahoo in referral traffic stats. It’s the fourth largest platform for traffic referrals in the world.

How To Use Pinterest?

If traffic is your goal, make social media sites like Pinterest a priority. Include it as one of your top 3, along with Facebook and Twitter. It really has incredible viral potential, and has the ability to drive thousands of people to your websites merely using images and comments as an attraction model. It’s affordable, simple and you’ll see results immediately.

#2: The Fury of Facebook

It’s true – Facebook produces 75% of all referral traffic on social media sites. The reason why it’s here at number 2, is that Pinterest users are a lot more likely to buy, share and interact once they get to your websites – making them more valuable than Facebook users.

How To Use Facebook?

Social media sites like Facebook need to be your top priority for driving traffic to your websites. Use social media management to effectively diversify your update strategy, and create lots of engaging content there. Videos, media, podcasts, slideshows, text and images – Facebook wants it all.

#3: The Rise of LinkedIn

LinkedIn has just undergone a makeover, and has recently seen a 1000% jump in referral traffic to Facebook. Twitter decided to part ways with the business social media marketing giant, which had an impact on both sites. The main impact being that people were now moving from LinkedIn to Facebook, to your websites.

How To Use LinkedIn?

Social media sites like LinkedIn should be used for business purposes, but they need to be optimized as well. All of your group or business posts need to be SEO’d, not to mention your profile. If you can create a nice LinkedIn traffic boost, your Facebook referral traffic will automatically increase, as will your website traffic.

#4: The Booming Blog

Social websites like your blog have the power to generate tons of excellent traffic, simply by focusing on a comprehensive SEO strategy. When you rise in the ranks, people will visit your blog more often, and your social sites will funnel extra visitors there as well. Your blog can then do what your website can’t – gain clients as fans.

How To Use Your Blog?

The only way to use social media sites properly in this instance, is to have a daily content strategy. Your optimized blog posts and accompanying social media updates should send your blog running up the ranking ladder. After 3 months you should be on page 1. But you must post on these social media pages each day.

#5: Growling Google+ or Terrific Twitter?

You’ve probably heard a lot about social media sites like Google+ being great as an SEO tool to boost your traffic ratios – right? Well, here’s some news for you – don’t bother. People have reported a steady decline in referral traffic from Google+ since its inception. You are better off using Twitter as a social site to generate traffic. Why? Because sharing there is fast and Google likes that.

How To Use Twitter?

I would recommend at least 4-8 tweets per day that have been pre-written and optimized with keywords and appropriate hashtags. These don’t include the ‘response’ tweets you should be sending to inspire conversation in your network.

These social media sites will get you that extra traffic you need each day. All you have to do is maintain a solid, performance –based social strategy and the traffic will happen. What are you waiting for? Go and work on your social SEO immediately!

“While not new, most professional blogs follow the media and advertising model that has existed for decades on TV, internet, and media: Create compelling content, and subsidize with advertisements. We see this as only the start, as ads will now start to integrate the crowd to create, source, become the creative, and share.”

Tip: Advertising should be part of your social media marketing strategy daily. It’s becoming more important, and can generate the most leads for your company. Look at creating innovative, interactive and creative ads that force people to interact with you on social media sites.

While the tech gets easier, “Delivering interesting information to people who care about it is harder than ever.”

Tip: Chris blogs at least once a week. He tweets or posts social updates at least 4X per day. He focuses on a private free newsletter to build a quality list for use in future marketing efforts. He provides audio podcasts to diversify his social media marketing delivery. Finally, he writes helpful books that people can read on planes. Follow his example!

Mari Smith Says:

Be excellent on one particular platform and don’t spread yourself too thin. Mari is always channelling her social media marketing knowledge into Facebook, which improves her expertise and presence there. Her main fan base is on this platform, so she apportions most of her time to it.

Tip: Mari is all about relationship marketing, she teaches her fans to spend more time ‘interacting’ than posting. An interaction is a direct prompt from someone to engage in conversation or an action. These must be part of your hour a day strategy!

Michael Stelzner Says:

“Business owners were more likely to use social media marketing (90+%) than employees working for a business (81%).” Increasingly however, it’s outsourcers that are using social media for their clients. If you know your audience, you can reach them. They want interaction, so connecting isn’t difficult at all. Give to get.

Tip: Social media marketing done right, takes a team. Not everyone can afford a team, but everyone can afford to outsource. If your business isn’t outsourcing some of your social media efforts, then you’ll be left behind. Cut down your hour a day, into 20 minutes a day, by outsourcing parts of your content.

Jason Falls Says:

“Make search engines love you and your social efforts. Since mid-to-late 2010 (or maybe earlier), Google and Bing have been using social media engagement metrics as a ranking signal. Things like mentions, shares, likes, and retweets are used by search engines as a form of “social proof,” much like links.”

Tip: The more you engage, the higher your rankings will be. Jason knows that social media marketing is about interaction. Without it, there is no point. Person-to-person interaction is all that matters. Make sure that yours counts for SEO, and that you use keywords!

Social Media Marketing Tips In Review:

• Use some of your hour a day to advertise in creative ways
• Break your strategy down into steps that can be managed daily
• Focus on a single platform and on connecting with people there
• Use outsourcing if you struggle to get your campaigns off the ground
• Engage, engage, engage! For better SEO and busier pages.

Use these 5 pro tips to assist you in your hour-a-day social media marketing strategies. In no time you’ll get all the exposure, rankings and sales that you need to grow and succeed!

SMS Marketing Recap: What Is It Again?

SMS marketing is a lot of things, but it’s evolved with social communication and strategy. In fact, that one-on-one messaging system was the first form of mobile social media, and it deserves some props for that.

  • SMS marketing can help you create small communities around your brand or business. For example, a gym can collect gym subscribers and let them know when times for classes change.
  • SMS marketing can keep people informed like a mini private news service for your brand. A quick message burst and everyone knows that your club is having a booming party on Friday night. These can go viral you know.
  • SMS marketing is one those ‘leave on auto pilot’ solutions. We love those! Just add in what’s going on, and grow your subscriber list.

TIP! Some 90% of all people READ their SMS’s!

Dave from MindMe Mobile says, “Your SMS text message marketing campaign will be highly lucrative if you monitor it, and learn from the feedback and reactions that you receive during your strategy. Tweaking strategies as you go along will result in a steady flow of income, from your effort!”

He’s not wrong. Like any great ‘social’ media campaign, monitoring your SMS campaign on Pinterest will get you the best returns. Here’s how to do it!

How To Attract Millions With a Great SMS-Pinterest Strategy

So, how do you use Pinterest, the massive image and video sharing site to get people to sign up to your SMS lists? Simple. You pander, and then you evoke emotion. Here are some tips to get you there.

1. Make an image really worth looking at. It should be about your business (gym, bakery, club, retail store) and be inspirational. Include an INCREDIBLE special in the image and in small, at the bottom, an SMS marketing prompt to inspire new sign ups. Get more freebies when you join our list!

2. Be local – all the time. Retail stores are local stores and you’ll want to attract your local audience. Find out what’s happening in your town or city, support it, create awesome sharable images about it – then include you SMS sign up at the bottom.

3. Take full advantage of QR codes. They’re fun to use on Pinterest and work like magic with SMS marketing. They are also less threatening. So when someone likes your image, have the QR code take them to an SMS sign up page – offer an incentive!

4. Don’t only promote your SMS marketing number and word. But if you’re going to – choose a word that you can define in an inspiring and meaningful way. Choose an image that really compliments it for your pin.

There are a thousand variations of doing this to make SMS marketing work for your business on Pinterest or sites like Instagram. QR codes are fantastic, or you can keep your SMS words and numbers small and unobtrusive – remember the more people share the better your business is promoted.

But how do you create these elusive viral videos for your brand? Let’s take a look at some top secret tips from expert marketers.

#1: All Virals Have an X Factor

All viral videos have that something ‘special’ that makes them super sharable. Whether it’s a brief moment of entertainment, or a 3 minute video of sheer brilliance – you’ll always find that these videos make people say, ‘you have to see this.’

#2: All Virals Are Pushed by Influencers

How do ten million people see these viral videos within a day? Easy – they are first spotted by internet influencers, who then share them with their community of thousands. Make sure that your viral is seen by the right people, to increase your viral potential.

#3: Keep Them Short and Simple

The truth is that most viral videos are no more than 1 minute long. People love videos that don’t impose on their time, so the shorter the better. If you can do something incredible, hilarious, cute, weird or shocking in 30 seconds, you’ll be a hit.

#4: Your Outstanding Thumbnail

You need to spend a good amount of time picking out the best and most alluring thumbnail image for your viral videos. It’s the first thing people see, and it’s the reason they’ll click on your video. A bad, hasty image can ruin a highly viral video.

#5: Viral Videos Are Personal Showcases

When someone shares a viral vid, they’re saying that they approve or like your video. It makes up part of their online social profile – all their friends are going to see it. Make your viral cool enough to say something awesome about the person sharing it.

#6: Say Something About Your Brand

Your Youtube viral videos need to say something about your business or brand. They don’t have to say it outright, but they should contribute in some important way to your brand image. This should make you ask the question – how do you want people to feel about your brand?

#7: Be Emotional

Brands and brand advertising is usually so dry and emotionless. You’ll find in many viral videos that nearly all of them are emotional or trigger an emotion in some way. For the famous ‘Charlie bit me’ viral, the theme ‘cute kids’ was the trigger.

#8: Be Different

Don’t try to be the same as other brands in your niche – be different! Your viral videos need to have an edge, be quirky or just be something people haven’t seen before. If you can give your audience this, you’ll get a ton of brand exposure.

#9: Leave The Advertising Out of the Advert

Viral videos are advert-free. The advertising is built in – when people see who created the video. Not loading your vid with tons of terrible pop ups and ad screens will score you big viral points.

#10: Hit The Streets

For a brand, few things are as awesome as interacting with people in the street, or in real world situations. When lots of people are in a video, people will watch it just to see what happens. You can use this curiosity to create viral videos.

With new trends like reactive social marketing, one-on-one video responses and viral marketing – it’s good to stay in touch with how you can take your brand to new heights, using unique tactics from the pros. Today, I’m going to teach you how brand prompting can get you a whole lot of exposure.

What is Brand Prompting?

Brand prompting is when you have a plan or strategy to create virality out of a brand-on-brand interaction. It can also be done internally, though this is quite an unknown, sneaky brand ploy that pretends to be fan-to-brand interaction, but is actually all brand interaction.

The most recent example of brand prompting can be seen in the extremely viral ‘Bodyform’ video response, where a fan left a funny comment on their Facebook page, and Bodyform responded with a funny Youtube video.

Bodyform as a brand, probably doesn’t want their fan base to know that this was an orchestrated marketing strategy – and while I can’t confirm that it was, the possibility exists. Brands do this to let their fans know that they are listening.

bodyform How Brand Prompting Can Put Your Business on The Social Map

A fan ‘prompts’ a brand to respond with a controversial, funny, or interesting comment or post. The brand then chooses to respond, by doing something very un-brand like. This is brand prompting. In the old days brands never interacted with their audience, especially not on a public one-on-one basis. Now, it’s something to aspire to.

How To Do Brand Prompting For Your Brand

• Choose a very good fan comment to respond to
• If one doesn’t exist, get a friend to set you up
• Go all-out, creating a unique, interactive brand prompt
• The best mediums are audio, video and images
• Show your brand ‘personality’ in your response
• Make sure that it’s extremely sharable, but not offensive

Brand prompting functions best when you have the beginning of your viral campaign all worked out. That means getting your employees or a professional company to get the ball rolling on your success.

• Leave positive comments on your response
• Improve your likes and shares
• Create press releases on the news
• Create articles based on social media to give you exposure
• Begin and promote a hashtag
• Brand prompting uses that ‘news’ element to be relevant

If a brand had to come up to me and ask what they can do to increase virality on a platform like Facebook, this is what I’d suggest. Though having the opportunity to do it for real is priceless. This is when brand prompting works best.

Otherwise, be part of the story. Get your brand ambassadors to leave ‘lead-in’ comments on large brand pages, and see if they respond. You’ll get some great exposure from the experience, and you’ll gain a big name ally.

If you have a small budget, or a small scale social marketing campaign, just slip in one or two well-thought out brand prompts each month – you never know when they’ll pay off. Plus, sharing is what social is all about!

Reactive Social Marketing: The Bodyform Truth

A fan recently engaged Bodyform – a feminine hygiene brand – leaving a witty, hilarious Facebook post on their brand page. In response, Bodyform posted a well-scripted, equally as hilarious video response. This video response was clearly part of a reactive social marketing campaign, created to spread public interest in the brand, and improve likability.

It’s one of the most successful viral video responses that we’ve seen in a reactive social marketing strategy. Here’s the initial fan post by Richard Neill:

Richard accused Bodyform of lying to men about how women are when they are on their period. The quip received an impressive 86,000 likes and 3,600 comments in 1 day. Now, there’s an opportunity here that I’ll do a post about later – that you should include in a reactive social marketing campaign. I call it brand prompting.

Aside from that, there’s the incredible video response that Bodyform left for Richard and all of their fans. I have to say Bodyform, you did a really good job of responding to that brand comment. They included an update of their own to accompany the video and said:

“We loved Richard’s wicked sense of humour. We are always grateful for input from our users, but his comment was particularly poignant. If Facebook had a “love” button, we’d have clicked it. But it doesn’t. So we’ve made Richard a video instead. Unfortunately Bodyform doesn’t have a CEO. But if it did she’d be called Caroline Williams. And she’d say this.”

The Facebook and Youtube Reactive Social Marketing Results

Not only was the reactive social marketing video an instant viral sensation, garnering more than 3,327,668 million views on Youtube, it also received 14,820 likes and 303 dislikes on their page. On Facebook, the post received an astounding 9,554 likes, 4,908 shares and 927 comments. Impressive seeing as Bodyform only has 7000 likes on their page.

Facebook fans commented:

Lauren Kate Turner: “I actually might start buying Bodyform rather than Always, purely because of this! Amazing”

Hope Yordy: “Great come back Caroline!!!! Loved it…hahahahahaa Richard what do you have to say for yourself NOW???”

Rowlands Pharmacy: “Hi Guys, what an excellent way to address such a taboo subject. We applaud both Bodyform and Richard Neill for such a humorous take on this.”

Reactive Marketing Plays For Your Brand

So – what did Bodyform do here that was right?

• In the event that Richard was not a secret employee of Bodyform (which is unlikely) they responded using a personal response video. There were no ads or extras in the video, the sarcasm and pretend CEO reply was enough.

• Bodyform promoted Facebook on their Youtube page, by including the link in their URL space and at the end of their video.

• Part of Bodyform’s reactive social marketing campaign meant creating virality on Youtube and on Facebook. They embedded the response to Facebook.

• Encouraged a hashtag – #bodyform on Twitter.

What they did wrong – well, have a look at their brand page. The ‘Richard’ post was repeated by another (fake?) user, and there are comments in their video update that have been repeated.

This makes me think the entire thing was orchestrated – and while the video reactive social marketing is superb, the execution needs work. It is however, exactly what brands should be doing, in response to individual fan comments.

These posts make people cringe, drive fans away or worse – they bore people to death. If your business is guilty of one of these 7 deadly sins of social media posting, then you need to correct it now!

#1: Lusting To Sell More To Your Fans

If nearly all of your posts try to sell your fans something, then you’re guilty of lusting after their money. You’re also guilty of making the #1 mistake in social media – direct selling, instead of letting your reputation, knowledge and community sell for you. If your Facebook, Twitter and blog pages are strewn with sales talk, get rid of it all right now!

#2: Being Gluttonous About Information

Most social marketers spend their days working to collect or encourage interaction on their pages. This could involve all sorts of marketing tricks, in a desperate attempt to get some comments, likes or shares. Don’t be gluttonous about information – the more you give, the more you’ll receive. Help people, teach people, comment lots and lots!

#3: Having a Greedy Attitude About Who You Are

You must have noticed that the businesses that do really well with social media, are the ones that highlight the people that run their platforms. It’s far more interesting listening to Greg than it is reading something from a stationary company. Don’t be greedy about who you are, you are your business – so share your personality with your fans.

#4: Moving Like a Sloth on Your Posting Plan

A torrid sin in social media posting, is posting too little. Fans like to visit your page each day and see something new there, even if it’s something small. If you’re like a sloth when it comes to strategies and plan implementation, then you need to change your ways – or your social media sites will go one way – down.

#5: The Wrath of The Online Business Guru

It’s nice to be respected in your field, but don’t forget to be humble about it. Being overtly negative in your posts, or overly hostile to an incredibly angry commenter – is not going to elevate you in the eyes of your fans. Settle disputes by email, or at least calm the person down with promises of free samples, incentives and customer service.

#6: Envious of Other Pages Resulting in Copycat Syndrome

If your competitor is doing something great and you feel compelled to copy them all the time, keep in mind that it takes a lot of resources to make an idea work. You could be driving away the fans you have, for the sake of posting something you ‘think’ will work. Find what works for you, use your analytics systems and test out your own campaign.

#7: Too Proud to Ask For Help

No business is an island – I say it all the time. In social media, it takes a community to make a page work, so don’t be too proud to ask them for help. After all, they use your page as well. Get ideas, knowledge and help from your pool of fans, and improve your pages the old fashioned way.

Do you know of another deadly social media posting sin, that small business owners need to avoid? Tell me about it here!
